As I am sure some of you know, Homewood-Flossmoor High School was in the news again with the ‘Gay Fine By Me’ campaign. Going to H-F and seeing kids wear shirts that for lack of a better term, made it seem like the civil rights movement all over again, was truly horrible. I can’t begin to wonder what it was like for those who were gay hearing crude terms about homosexuality being tossed around the halls of H-F. It was a dark day at H-F. However, I do wonder if this ‘Gay Fine By Me’ will create more stability with acceptance of gays among teenagers. Fighting for the civil rights of African Americans nearly 50 years ago wasn’t smooth sailing at first. It took time and persistence, and soon more people were begining to realize that blacks and whites do not have to be seperate things. Instead, they can be one unified whole. Perhaps the same outcome will occur at H-F, and then all of Cook County, then all of Illinois, and then all of the U.S.?
