04/17/01 07:25 PM: How much is that doggy

How much is that doggy in the window?

If you’re at a pet store, probably too much. But that’s really not the issue. Here’s an MSNBC article about “puppy mills” and stuff. Actually, I found that on the links page of this animal rescue organization’s website that I was checking out, animal-advocates.com. Very good organization. I saw what the article was about and started to write this. Then I actually read it. It’s not a bad article per se, but it kind of focuses on how to get a purebred dog, without patronizing a pet store or buying from a breeder of questionable ethics. Adopting a dog is great, if you do it for the right reasons. And if you’re doing it for the right reasons, you’re probably not fixated on one particular breed. Maybe you have a preference, but you’re not going to do business with a guy selling animals like he was running a hotdog stand just to get the exact animal that you want. At least I hope not. There’s nothing wrong with adopting a “mutt.” If you’re seriously thinking about adopting an animal, why not go to the local SPCA? You’ll probably pay $50 (barely, if even, covering the cost of food, vaccinations, etc) instead of $500. And, more importantly, you’ll have a clear conscience.
