I am currently reading Assata: An Autobiography. Assata Shakur is a self-described Black Revolutionary who was convicted of murdering a state trooper. She escaped from prison and is currently living in Cuba. The book is actually very interesting. It flows. Very easy to digest, as far as autobiographies go. It alternates chapters, the odd ones about the events following her arrest on the New Jersey Turnpike, and the even ones telling the story of her life growing up. That keeps it from dragging on. Since the average human attention span is between twenty and thirty minutes, it’s easy to finish a chapter and move onto a different topic before your interest wanes. Whatever your opinion about the alleged crimes, you can’t help but cringe at the torture that she endured during her stay in jail/prison. Keeping a woman under 24-hour solitary confinement in a men’s prison? Is that justice? Anyway, if you’re ever in the mood for an autobiography, check it out.
