07/22/01 07:10 PM: Gone Looney Tunes

I am reminded of another disturbing incident. The incident merely points to a larger trend. I went to Darien Lake yesterday with some friends. Is it just me or was it more fun before it became a Six Flags park with a big Looney Tunes store in the middle of it? Nothing against Looney Tunes, but what gives? I drive two hours to ride roller coasters, not to purchase Warner Brothers merchandise. I was chiding myself for going off on a tangent there when I realized that it actually ties into my point anyway. At 10:00 P.M., after the rides had closed and before the laser show, a local radio station had some sort of setup on this overgrown gazebo. There were two people blasting some godawful dance music. Naturally, there was a crowd. And what do you do when standing before a crowd of people? Throw stuff at them! The two radio guys threw various items into the crowd, like t-shirts and cds (hopefully not of whatever music they were playing). And of course, everyone went nuts. There was not a person there that wouldn’t have killed their own mother to get their hands on a free Kiss 107 t-shirt. The level of idolatry just amazes me. Let’s trample people to get near two DJs wearing big silly hats and maybe catch the crap they are tossing out. One of my friends was as saddened by the display as I was. We sat off to the side while the other three went with hopes of catching one of the Pringles cans that they were tossing around. I guess my main point was the idolatry thing, but I also can’t remember such things ever taking place before the Six Flags name was attached. For crying out loud, there is a sign at the entrance to the Mind Eraser
