06/22/01 07:06 AM: Censorship is never cool

I for one totally support Dave in his criticism of Indymedia. Not that I ever had anything to do with it, but what’s going on sounds pretty lame the way Dave tells it. Someone posts a story, and it gets deleted from the website because it is “not favorable to labor.” WTF? I’m no expert. Creating a labor-based society or whatever might be a good idea. Or it might not. I dunno. And I’m pretty far to the left. But censoring something just because it shows “the left” or “labor” in a bad light is ludicrous. If people have any sense, they will see all the positive things associated with the left and decide that they far outweigh the occasional negative. Maybe not as many people have sense as one would hope, but isn’t the news media supposed to be about reporting what’s going on as objectively as possible? Make no bones about it, I’d probably be a horrible reporter. I become terribly subjective when it comes to things like that. But if you’re going to get into that sort of thing, then do it right. I love reading op-ed pieces, but there is a reason that they have their own section in the NEWSpaper.
