04/03/03 10:14 AM: I Hate Philosophy

I haven’t updated in a while because other things are keeping me way more busy than they should be. I just flunked yet another Philosophy test, so I figure that now is as good of a time as ever to update. Its not that the teacher sucks, its that I suck at philosophy. Its just not my bag.

In other news, the PoliSci listserv is hopping with activity about the war. It is actually pretty interesting to hear some of the arguments for and against the war. I don’t mind when people debate about stuff that they actually know about, but it is when people become political activists to show the world that they too, can be controversial is what pisses me off. The whole Bush is going for oil is probably the worst excuse for no war that I’ve heard. If Bush wants more oil, why not just take over the whole Middle East. While we’re at it, why don’t we take over Venezuela, too. After all, they are a member of OPEC.

On that note, I also want to address the supporters in saying that this is not a humanitarian war for the sole purpose of helping out the Iraqi people. Yes, there are human rights being violated, but if we were to say that this war is because we want to help them out, we would also have to go to war with North Korea, China, and many African nations.

This war has two purposes. First, we need to give the UN some backbone. Even though they are not in the war, the resolutions made regarding demilitarization of Iraq need to be backed up, no matter the economic instabilty it will cause. “Get rid of your missles or else…” Or else what? The UN assumed that Iraq would back down at that threat, and when they didn’t, we ended up in this mess. If Iraq were to get away with the making of weapons, it would have set precedent for other nations to do the same, and the UN as we know it would collapse. Second, we have to establish a new government in Iraq. I know I said before that this is not a humanitarian mission to free the Iraqi people from its despotic government, but while our soldiers are there, we might as well overthrow the regime. Saddam has publicly given money to families of terrorists. Whether or not these terrorists belong to Al-Queda is not relevant. After September 11th, we declared war on all terrorists, not just one group of them.

I doubt that anyone reading this is becoming political for the sake of being political and using either argument to support their stance on the war. If you are, please read a book, and get to know what is really going on. Also, no matter how you feel about the war, support our troops. There are guys I graduated with not even a year ago that are fighting for us. Lets hope that they come back safe.
