07/19/01 06:43 PM: Too much TV

I have been watching quite a bit of television recently. I know, I should be spending my time in a more productive manner. That’s not the point, though. One thing that I’ve noticed (and I am sure you have too) is that the television commercials are becoming more and more stupid! Unfortunately, I do not have any specific examples to share with you. Turn on the TV and you’ll see what I mean. I understand that the companies who are advertising are seeking to make a profit. They hire advertising agencies to create a cute little commercial that captures people’s attention in hopes that they can get people to buy their “thing” and make aforesaid profit. Well, it is not working for this viewer. When I see a stupid commercial, all I can think about is how silly it is. Rarely after watching these commercials do I even remember what product they were advertising. Oh well, they must be paying off somehow. Half of the time I’m channel surfing during the commercials trying to find something else to watch for a minute or two. But, of course, with AT&T Digital Cable I am graced with small advertisement pictures when I change the channel. That’s just about when I think it goes a bit too far. Give me back my analog cable without advertisements!

Anyway, they haven’t put advertisements in between chapters in books yet (that I know of!) so I have started reading a book called Invention by Design; How Engineers Get from Thought to Thing by Henry Petroski. This is quite an interesting book for the engineer and non-engineer alike (I am definitely a part of the latter group). More about the book in a later update.

By the way, thanks for the welcome Kevin. :)
