10/29/01 04:01 PM: History Repeats?

I received an email from a reader saying that the bin Laden nuclear threat is propaganda to scare the American people:

“WOW !! I just read this article on your website about bin Laden nukes. I can’t believe they are trying to do this again! This entire war is a repeat of history. It just keeps happening over and over and over again and nobody remembers our history more than 5 years into the past.

During the Gulf War, as the US government saw American support for the war for oil decreasing, they announced that Saddam Hussein was about to have nuclear capabilities. In fact, it has been proven that Hussein was probably about 10 years away from developing any kind of nuke at the beginning of the war. Telling the American people that there was a nuclear threat was a great way to get them to support the war.

Its all happening all over again.”

I’m not quite sure what my thoughts of this are. I happen to think that bin Laden may very well have access to nuclear arms, probabally through Pakistani connections. But, who knows.

I found this site, entitled Reason vs. Terrorism explaining people’s opinions on why we need to go to war.

From one of the articles, “This is the great danger that we now face: that our nation’s resolve will be blunted and our response made impotent by the liberal intellectuals’ attempt to obfuscate these issues. The immediate, gut-level reaction of the American people is unequivocal. They want war. But to carry through on that intention requires more than one’s gut; it requires thorough, logical, long-range thinking. We must have a clear grasp of the means, ends, and morality of the war we are about to wage.”

Wow. Well, I try to present both sides of the argument here. I hate being undecided on something so important though. I will construct my thoughts later. Today, I was destroyed by the first part of an AP Physics test! Yay! Tommorow is the free response, maybe I can recover a little bit.
