08/03/01 09:09 AM: Return to Oz

I stayed up until 5 AM last night (this morning) watching The Return to Oz (or something like that). I guess it’s something of a sequel to The Wizard of Oz. My friend Al informed me that there are numerous books—he said 30, I don’t know if that’s exaggerating or not—in a series of sorts about Oz. Well, let me tell you, this one was nothing like The Wizard of Oz. By that I mean that there were no happy munchkins dancing around, or anything like that. I must admit, this movie freaked me out. Oz has been taken over by this mountain king guy. (Please spare me the corrections, I was watching this at 4 AM.) And the scarecrow has been turned into an ornament by him. Dorothy sets out to get him rescued and changed back and all. The cheap 1985 special effects really add to the freakiness. The thing that really got me was when there would be action for a while and then it would cut to the mountain where a face would appear on a slab of rock and start talking and there would be thunder. . . and this makes no sense whatsoever unless you have seen it and know what I’m talking about. In conclusion, go watch the movie.
