06/18/01 08:44 PM: Factory Farming
Ignorance of factory farming methods may be easier to stomach than the truth. Never were truer words spoken. I could go on all day detailing specifics. But, quite frankly, you wouldn’t want to hear it. Right? Anyway, the larger point, going beyond animal liberation rhetoric, is that most people today (Americans, at least) simply don’t know (and don’t want to know) where their food comes from. I’d like to take a survey of urbanites and see how many of them could tell me whether or not carrots grow on trees. The act of eating is remarkably removed from the act of producing food. You can walk down to [insert giant regional supermarket chain] and purchase, encased in plastic, something that used to be walking around (well, maybe, if it wasn’t a veal calf or a chicken in a battery cage) for $.99 a pound. And talk about misleading labeling! They label a bunch of cow ribs as “crown roast.” And it’s not just meat. With all the chemicals that could be on you fruit and vegetables, you might as well just drop them on the floor and eat them. Down with agribusiness!
