01/21/04 04:39 PM: Iowa, New Hampshire, Oh My!

I have returned from Iowa. Actually, I returned earlier this week, but I haven’t updated the site. That’s okay, I’ve had class and such!

The trip to Iowa was amazing, even if Howard Dean came in third. I arrived in Moline, IL on Friday evening and met up with my friend Andy and my lovely girlfriend Esther. We headed down to Macomb, IL where Andy lives and stayed at his house. The next morning, we headed to Burlington, IA to check in for the Perfect Storm. We were dispatched to a town near the Missouri border called Keokuk. It was a rather run-down town, classic rust-belt. Most of the people we talked with were not caucusing, and a few were going to support Gephardt. We spread the word about Dean as best we could, and then headed back to Burlington (and later Macomb) that night.

The next day, we headed back up to the Quad Cities. Dean was speaking at West High School in Davenport. We arrived very early, and were able to stand right near the front. We saw Tom Harkin, Howard Dean, and his wife Judy, who before then had never come to an event in Iowa. After his speech he came around and I shook his hand, told him I voted for him in D.C., and he signed my Harkin Steak Fry shirt! It was so exciting!

While it is a bummer that he lost in Iowa, I still have lots of hope for New Hampshire. While I can’t travel to New Hamsphire to campaign, I have been writing letters to undecided voters. I have some photos from Iowa, too, including a few good ones of us and of Dean. I’ll try to get some of those online soon.

I must get back to working on Voice stuff now, but I will try to update later this week.
