11/17/01 08:04 AM: Ramadan

Is it just me, or is the idea of ceasing to drop bombs on Afghanistan because of Ramadan a ridiculous idea? I am not saying that the bombing was necessary. Nor am I saying it was not. I really don’t know. I’m not an expert on Afghanistan or military strategy. It seems to me, however, that if it was necessary, it probably will not be necessary for much longer, if it even is at this point. The Taliban is in retreat, no? Its support is quickly dwindling. That’s what the propaganda says, anyway . . . . There can’t be much left to drop bombs on.

But really now, if we are “at war,” (consider this hypothetical) do we stop during our enemy’s “holy month” as a courtesy, as sign of good will, only to resume the massacre afterward? Is this the least bit logical? If we were being invaded, would we expect the fighting to cease from Christmas to New Year’s? I’m not making this out to be an Us vs. Them, Christian vs. Muslim thing, mind you. I’m an atheist myself. I’m merely pointing out the absence of logic in this argument.

If anything, we might want to stop dropping bombs because continuing to do so would be counterproductive and pointless.
