06/18/01 05:54 PM: Value?

Just one thought. I realize it’s not really dealing with the central theme of the Atlas Shrugged piece. But it’s something that always caused me to wonder. Why exactly is gold valuable? Why is (was) it a measure of wealth? I suppose it is less arbitrary than paper currency, since we can’t make it. But it’s still just something we find in the ground. I guess someone just decided one day that because it was shiny it would be an attractive item to barter or something. But is it really any more valuable than, say, copper? Heck, copper is probably more useful.
