02/24/03 02:49 PM: Lets Hear It for Protesters
I attended a lecture by the author of one of my book for the semester this afternoon. Before the lecture, a newspaper was handed out. I thought it had something to do with the lecture, but it turns out that it was an anti-war newspaper distributed by one of the professors. It had nothing to do with the lecture. After reading it, I was outraged that someone would take advantage of this lecture on race relations and sexuality to distribute their own propaganda. The articles in this publication are not only misleading, but some things said in the articles are outright lies.
“In January a UN study warned that 500,000 Iraqis could be injured in the early stages of a new US invasion. And, because US air attacks would likely destroy Iraq’s infrastructure, up to three million people could face dire malnutrition because of the attacks.”
The key words in that quote are the coulds used to describe the consequences. What about the people that are being injured in Saddam’s torture chambers? What about the people that are being starved by Saddam’s program to rid the country of people he doesn’t like, like the Kurds or the Shi’ite muslims living in the marshes of southern Iraq. Oh, nevermind about the Shi’ites, I forgot they were already wiped out by Saddam. Saddam is a ruthless dictator who will stop at nothing to further his reign of terror. Just listen to his native people tell of the horrors of living in Iraq. HIS OWN PEOPLE!! Its nice to think that we can have a peaceful world, but as long as there are tyrants like Hussein in power, it will never happen. Its nice and fluffy to believe that peace can happen, but I will not stand back while human rights are being abused.
About 50 years ago, world leaders wanted peace too. There is one in particular by the name of Neville Chamberlain. “There will be peace in our time.” Less than one year later, World War II was well underway, and Britain was fighting for its life. All during this war, “The Final Solution” was taking place, murdering well over 6 million of Hitler’s citizens.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Why can’t we ever learn from our mistakes?
