Man, that mad cow disease sure is something. Good luck to all you meat-eaters.
On a somewhat related note, I saw an interesting report on the local news the other day. There was a story about a supermarket that had placed labels with sell-by dates of Jan. 27 over labels with sell-by dates of Jan. 23 on some of their chicken. They may well have done this with their beef, pork, etc., but they only showed the labels specifically on a package of chicken. Outrageous, right? The FDA or the USDA or somebody must be all over them, right? Well, no. The practice is perfectly legal. Apparently, it is routine for supermarkets to take a second look at meat that is still unsold by its sell-by date. If they deem it to still be safe, they repackage it and stick a new label on it. That seems to have been a little too much work for this particular store. They didn’t bother to examine the meat in any greater detail than a visual inspection. They didn’t even repackage it. They just placed a new sticker over the old one and hoped that no one would notice. Bon app
