12/28/02 04:53 PM: My own “top ten”
In no way do I intend to compete with Dave’s list of the top-ten, but I felt that I had to contribute my piece to the mix. I haven’t heard some of the songs on Dave’s list but the ones I have heard definitely deserve to be on the list. From my own musical tastes, I compiled a list of a few songs that I especially enjoyed this year. This is by no means to say that these are any better or worse than the list dave compiled. Also, a number of these have received a lot of radio play. Sometimes that means that they are good!
Anyway, on with the list:
You Know You’re Right, Nirvana
Everyone knows Nirvana, and no, Kurt will never be brought back to life, but this song off of Nirvana’s self titled compilation album is definitely worth a mention.
Poem, Taproot
Off Taproot’s “Welcome” album, this song has received the most radio play. Other notable mentions on this album are “Art”, “Breathe” and “Fault.” Definitely worth a listen.
Diamonds and Guns, Transplants
This song is a new release. You may not have heard of the Transplants: Travis Barker (of Blink 182 and Boxcar Racer fame) are joined by Tim Armstrong (Rancid) and Rob Aston in their debut self-titled album . This song is pure genius—perhaps an exaggeration, but it is something worth a listen.
My December (Remix), Linkin Park
While you may flame me for selecting this song, I was a huge fan of the whole Reanimation album released this year by Linkin Park. While the creative song titles were not the most amusing aspect of the album, the quality of the music was superior as always. I do believe that I preferred the original My December to the remix, but this is a list from 2002.
All My Life, Foo Fighters
If you haven’t heard it, you should. “All my life I’ve been searching for something, something never comes never leads to nothing. Nothing satisfies but I’m getting close. Closer to the prize at the end of the road.” Good stuff.
The Red, Chevelle
Chevelle is a lesser known band, however this song is of superior quality. This is off of their first album, “Wonder what’s next” that I regret not owning.
Prayer, Disturbed
Off of Disturbed’s Believe album, if you haven’t heard this then you must be living under a rock. This is another one where the whole album is excellent, and selecting one song is difficult.
Innervision, System of a Down
Part of the “Steal this Album” collection. The whole disc is great, this song is just stands out for me, although “Add,” “Boom” and “Roulette” are excellent as well.
Deny, Default
I enjoy Default’s music, especially their acoustic version of Deny available for download on their website.
Fine Again, Seether
Seether, originally from South Africa found themselves on this year’s Ozzfest tour making a name for themselves. This is by far and away one of my favorite songs and I look forward to getting their album entitled “Disclaimer.”
Well, that’s ten, although they are in no particular order. Some honorable mentions, as well:
No One Knows, Queens of the Stoneage
Drowning, Crazy Town
All For You, Our Lady Peace
Never Again, Nickelback
Up All Night, Unwritten Law
Not Falling, Mudvayne
Dead Leaves & the Dirty Ground, White Stripes
When I’m Gone, 3 Doors Down
You can flame me too! Or not.
