03/03/03 11:32 PM: No Surprises

It’s been a good while since I last updated—so to avoid hearing “you really need to update your weblog, Dave”—I have decided to go ahead and post something.

It’s been an interesting past week, with GUSA elections and all sorts of other painfully fun things. For the uninformed, GUSA is the Georgetown University Student Association, and the election for President and Vice President were held last week. This should be prefaced with the statement that GUSA has no power other than as an advisory board, and a “student advocacy group.” In any case, as always, the election turned into a controversy, of many causes, and you can go to the Voice’s website and dig up some articles on it if you’d like more details.

Anyhow, I found myself in the middle of the mess, because I also help out with the Saxa Server project here, which also happens to run the elections. It was painful to read some of the emails sent to us following the election, along with hearing candidates say that they lost the election because someone “hacked” the system and stuffed the virtual ballot box. You all can check out our response to this in an FAQ we put together. This includes a $100 cash “prize” for anyone who can demonstrate “hacking” a test election. We even give them our source code for the election software. There have been no claims of successful hacking so far.

Moving along a bit, today was my International Finance midterm. It went decently, and it’s nice that it’s over as I have no more midterms or major things to do before spring break starts on Friday.

I wish I had something interesting to report that happened over the weekend, but alas I do not. The most exciting thing I did, was probably sending out an “unofficial” broadcast email to the undergraduate student body here at Georgetown. It was exciting, and a bit terrifying, because the night before I was testing the script I would use to send the mail and I accidently sent around 300-400 copies of the email to myself. I fixed the problem with the script, and ran about 10 more tests before actually sending it out to the entire university. It would have been just really, really bad had I sent 300 copies to everyone’s mailboxes. Fortunately, nothing like that happened.

It’s sad in a way that the most fun I had was sending a broadcast email, but hey I was busy studying for midterms and such.

Oh, I also watched an interesting movie called “Last Night.” I had seen it on HBO or some such a very long time ago, but I didn’t see the whole thing. I found it on DVD and was able to finally see the entire film. The story is that it’s the last night on earth, for whatever reason the world is ending at midnight, everyone has known about this for a year or so, and has made their final plans. This shows the journey of a couple different people and how they handle coming to terms with the fact the world is ending and there is nothing they can do about it. I really like it, at first I thought it was a bit depressing, but it really isn’t. It’s hard to find, but I defintely suggest watching it if you get the chance.

The final part of this update is a bit of site news. February was again a record high month for visits here, with even more people from Georgetown viewing it than before. The most visits are from people in LXR, Village A and Village B… I know who most of these people are, except the LXR person. Oh well, whatever. Knowing people who visit the website might encourage me to update more often, but I don’t know becuase laziness always seems to get the best of me.

Speaking of which, I need to get some sleep. I have a few things to do tomorrow.
