09/17/03 03:55 PM: on mother nature.

september is the typical month where everything mother nature can unleash at us is set into a three ring circus tent and told to “fuck shit up.”

a hurricane is brewing over the heads of my east coast friends. two of my best friends, dave and sofia, have been instant messaging me here in the midwest as they lay witness to my favorite weather event – a hurricane. i’m an east coast baby, and lived through two major hurricanes (gloria and andrew), and several tropical storms. those who know me know i’m deadly afraid of lightning, however, if said lightning is occompanied by a hurricane – look out, i’m front and center. i just love the duality of a hurricane – the insane winds and rain, followed by a calm more chilling and haunting and beautiful than any normal day can offer.

here in the midwest, a different kind of plague is brewing. the deadly ladybugs, aka asian fighting beetles or whatever they are called, are swarming the campus of illinois state university. turn left, and one of these fighting ladybugs of death could be flying at your head, about to attack. they look like simple little ladybugs, but be warned – they bite. and it hurts like you wouldn’t believe. once again, mother nature has told her children to “fuck shit up.” these bugs appear to be ladybugs, since they are of a reddish hue and have spots. nay, my friends, beware – these are far too yellow and have far too many spots to be our timid and wish-making friends. caitlin and rebecca, two floormates here in colby five, spent an entire afternoon watching the ladybugs run into their window and naming them, watching how long they would stay on the window before attacking new prey. there is currently one on my window, who i will name barry for no reason whatsoever. he is looking for a way into my room to attack my summer-pale flesh, but his journey, he will soon see, will be unsuccessful.

the left coast is probably experiencing beautiful weather, and to them, i say “phooey.” mother nature just loves the movie stars entirely too much.

unrelated footnotes of interest:
