02/06/06 08:27 AM: Early Hours at NCIS

I had a hard time sleeping last night, I probably only managed to get two hours. Fell asleep around 3, and was up at 5:00. It’s now 11:20, and I’m starting to run out of steam… but I’ve been here since 6:15, so I’ll be able to leave in a little while.

It’s funny, when you work 9-5, lunchtime comes a mere three hours after you arrive. But, when you work absurdly early in the morning, by the time lunch rolls around you’re almost done. In fact, I eat at my desk, usually around this time. While I always thought I would hate working hours like this, it’s really not all that bad.

Though, I really do think a lot of it has to do with the work environment. You really have to like what you are doing to 1) get to work before the sun begins to rise, and 2) put in lots of “unpaid” hours, considering I am an intern. So, I get up extremely early in order to donate my time. Sure, it’s a paycut from my other job, but the experience is worth it. Also, the office environment is unlike anything else I’ve experienced. There is a lot of general camaraderie, as well as a sense of making some kind of difference. While I might not directly be influencing the course of the United States of America by making this web site, I’m part of something bigger that does make a difference on a daily basis. And I like that. As much as I enjoy working for a paycheck at the career center, it’s definitely not the same.

Plus, now I can nitpick NCIS when it’s on TV.
