From DC@the Political State Report:
As the city digs out, political heat turns up
As the snow begins to melt in the region, tempers still flare over how the District government handled the “snow emergency.” Add to this, the fact that D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams was on vacation in Puerto Rico during the storm, and this has all the earmarks of yet another controversy.
Some streets remained blocked for more than two days, as the city snow removal crews slowly made their way around the city. And with delays and shutdowns of the Metrorail system, the result is a mess of frustrated commuters and residents. D.C. City officials have reported that as of Thursday, all 1,100 miles of city streets had been plowed. However, this comes some five days since the snow started falling.
In this piece at the Washington Post, Mayor Williams is quoted, “Just look at the streets. Clearly we’ve done better than in the past.” Most residents, though, remained unimpressed by the District’s ability to clear the streets.
This column at the Georgetown Voice also echoes some of the concerns residents had over the problems caused by the snow.
The general consensus seems to be, that while the weather can be unpredictable, the response of the city government should not be.
