06/01/01 10:58 AM: McCain: It's cool
Sen. John McCain steadfastly denies having any problems with the Republican Party when asked about such things in light of Jim Jeffords’ recent defection. He says the far-right ideologues need to get with it and that it is “well past time for the Republican Party to grow up.” He and most of his staff deny that he has any intention of becoming an independent and staging a Naderesque run for the presidency in 2004. But “one adviser would not rule out the possibility,” according to the New York Times, obviously fishing for some juicy piece of gossip to spice up their story. But in all seriousness, I think McCain would have a damn good chance if he ran in the next election. Heck, he didn’t do that bad last time. In the absence of any particularly compelling candidates (say. . . Ralph Nader), I could even see myself voting for him. If it came down to something like Bush/Gore/McCain, I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to vote for McCain (and maybe Pat Buchanan, too, depending on the ballot).
