10/02/01 08:54 PM: From the Scene

So I spent a good portion of the day today trying to schedule guests for this week’s edition of Politics Now!. No luck as of yet. Hopefully tommorow. I’m working on scheduling Senator Dick Durbin or Peter Fitzgerald.

Yesterday, after putting in a few hours at the radio station, I arrive at home to find the garage door will not open. I enter my house to find that we have no power! Of course the UPS’s are beeping up a storm and I find out that there was a bus accident about a mile away that caused power in my town to be lost. I hop in the car and head to the location of this accident. It seems that the bus collided with a car before plowing into the power pole. The impact caused the transfomer to fall off the pole and hit the ground, exploding on impact. Quite a messy scene. Fortunatly the bus was not in use at the time.

So why do I bring this up? Well the public in the Homewood area of the south side of Chicago got word of this breaking news via a live report from the scene for WHFH. Yes, I reported live from the scene. As I was walking down the sidewalk next to the accident scene talking into my phone saying things such as “I am live at the scene …” and these little kids ask me if I’m a reporter. Well, of course I am, I say. Ok so I don’t say that, but they did describe the explosion in little kid terms which I found to be interesting. Ok I have to go I want to see end of the Soup Nazi Seinfeld.
