05/17/01 08:58 PM: So I went to see
So I went to see this play tonight, called ART. It’s about these three guys. One buys a white-on-white painting for 200,000 Francs (roughly $40,000). His best friend thinks it’s the most ridiculous thing ever. He laughs at the painting and calls it “shit.” Then he starts really getting worked up over it. He hadn’t been spending much time with his friend lately, and he thinks that the friend is trying to replace him with the painting (and the artsy people that he’s been hanging around with and bought the painting from). A third friend who could give a rat’s ass about the painting gets dragged into it. He agrees that the painting was a worthless expenditure, but he tells the second friend that he’s going to have some fun with the first (as opposed to going nuts over the whole thing). The third friend says he starts to like the painting more and more as time goes on. Meanwhile all three friendships go to hell in a handbasket. Everyone takes turns degrading the others. After a very heated argument (several, actually), they all cool down, more out of exhaustion than anything else. The third friend basically says, look what we’ve come to, all over this shit painting (the big punchline being that he didn’t actually like the painting and was really playing a joke on the second friend as well as the first). It really would have been easier if I had just named the three guys. Oh well. It was a pretty good play. It won a Tony. It is a comedy and I skipped over most of the funny stuff. Oops. Go see it for yourself.
