04/20/01 10:55 AM: So, last night on Politics

So, last night on Politics Now! we were joined by U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon of Pennsylvania. We discussed at first the situation in China, which I believe is a very tough situation to make a call on. It first depends on who was really at fault. Of course, Rep. Weldon insists that it was the Chinese, but then the Chinese are saying it was our fault. We really can’t trust what either side says, since neither China or the United States would admit blame. Anyway, what Weldon had to say on China wasn’t as interesting as the discussion I had with him about the Free Trade Area of the Americas and the Environment. I never thought I would say this, but Rep. Weldon seems to be a Republican who isn’t a horrible, horrible person. He feels that the FTAA should not be negociated in secret, and that Congress may take action to get the text of the proposed free trade agreement made public. Weldon himself has not had access to the text. He also feels that we should only have a free trade policy that ensures that companies do not leave the United States and go to a third world country to abuse workers and the environment. Hats off to him for not being anti-environment. Too bad we can’t say the same for our President.
