12/01/01 06:58 PM: Exciting not@home
So, today my AT&T@Home cable service was shut off. So was everyone else in the Chicagoland area, and I believe all across the USA. Some 850,000 customers woke up without internet. Well, one thing that makes me upset was that I never got an email, snail mail, or phone call to tell me about what was going to happen. My dad called them this morning and they told him that it would be 2 weeks until it was working again. You can read about what’s going on with AT&T and Excite@Home over at C|Net News.
So, what am I doing in the short term? Well I was at Best Buy today and they were giving away free 30 day trials of MSN Internet Access, so I signed up for a trial and am using that now. I have to say, this MSN Explorer thing is kind of cool, i mean it has big, pretty, graphical buttons! So if you want to reach me in the short term, send a mail to daverstroup@msn.com. For some reason or another I can’t seem to check my whichwayup.org mail right now. Hopefully I will get that resolved.
If I had to use dialup for the long term, I’d probabally go with MSN. I know it’s better than AOL and it’s cheaper than my old Ameritech.
Oh! I received my mid-quarter progress report today, all A’s, one B+. Consider that I have missed the last 8 days of school and I say that isn’t too bad. That must mean I recieved an A on my Calculus exam, because that is the only grade so far in that class. Woo Hoo.
So, returning to my narration of the day’s events, I was at Best Buy. While at Best Buy, I splurged and bought a new video card. Yeah, the old Voodoo 5 is sort of not-that-compatible with Windows XP (I can’t get OpenGL to work no matter what I try), so I bought a VisionTek Geforce 3. Wow, I have to say it is most impressive, for the under $200 price. It’s not the top of the line, but it’s close enough and affordable enough that I recommend it.
Well, I just need my cable modem service back and everything will be good again.
