03/07/01 05:44 PM: Speaking of guns, WHY THE

Speaking of guns, WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYONE EVER WANT TO OWN ONE? These school shooting are just getting ridiculous. I mean, the very first one was ridiculous, but this copycat stuff is out of control. There was another one today in Pennsylvania, just two days after the one in California, and the list goes on and on. Today was pretty fucked up. In addition to the incident in Pennsylvania, a kid brought a gun to a school an hour or two from where I live. Luckily, someone reported his threat(s) to a teacher or principal or some authority before the kid had a chance to cause any damage.

If that doesn’t hit close enough to home, there was a bomb threat today at my school. Today was the first day we’ve had classes (because of snow days) since last week. That’s probably the only reason the bomb threat didn’t happen sooner. I wouldn’t doubt that some genius got the idea from Monday’s incident. But the bomb scare isn’t the thing that scares me. What scares me is that the bomb threat didn’t scare me. We’ve had so many of them over the past three years that it doesn’t seem like a big deal anymore. In fact, a bomb threat is a more common occurrence than a snow day at my school. That I can shrug it off as “just another bomb threat” appalls me. I’m as desensitized to that as kids are to TV violence. It’s like the boy who cried wolf. If there ever actually was a bomb or some such thing, nobody would believe it or take it seriously. And all this comes after the principal talked for ten minutes on the announcements this morning about how we’re lucky to have a safe environment at my school in the wake of all the crap that’s been going on.
