07/05/02 07:52 PM: Supreme Court

Well, the Court is at it again. As you already may know, they recently issued a ruling stating that public schools can have mandatory drug testing for students involved in any activities at school. What this means is, a school district can force drug tests on people in the band, the drama club, anything. Over at Slate there was a good article with analysis of where the ruling came from, and why it’s so stupid. Check it out.

Every day we lose more and more of our rights, and people don’t even seem to notice. The attitude of “Well, I don’t do drugs so it won’t impact me” is a dangerous one to take. Only for so long will the “it won’t impact me” hold true, and by the time it does impact you, it may be too late to voice your complaints.

People need to pay attention, and make sure they know the issues when the go to vote, and when they write/contact their representitives. Call me idealistic, but I think strong political action can stop this downward descent. Small things like the pledge ruling can help, but unfortunately they will most likely be overruled. The reasons I hear are quite, to put it bluntly, stupid too. Can we please stop with the “This is a christian nation,” because that’s simply incorrect.

Look at the Constitution. Do you see the word “God” or “Creator” in it. No. It was based on Federalism and NOT religion.
