03/19/05 10:14 AM: Terri Schiavo
As most of you heard, the feeding tube of brain-damaged Florida woman Terri Schiavo was removed yesterday. This decision was made by a Florida circuit court judge. The parents of Schiavo appealed the judge’s ruling to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. Even though her feeding tube was removed, Schiavo could survive for weeks allowing time for her tube to be reconnected. Her husband is making the claim that she would not want to be alive in her current state, and thus removing the tube is acceptable. I have mixed feelings about this case. On one hand, she is a human being, and killing someone else just because they have brain damage may not be the best answer. On the other side of the table, she might want to die, and anybody who is in so much pain (physically) and feels that their life has no meaning should be given that right. We all remember Dr. Jack Kevorkian who killed people (with their video taped consent) who were terminally ill and wanted to die. Look what happened to him. In my oppinion, there was nothing wrong with what he did. I think that a person should be given the right to die if there is absolutely no hope in helping them, and that they personally feel there is no reason to live. So, what’s the solution with Terri Schiavo? Well, according to her husband, she has said that she would like to die. I think there should be significant, public evidence that supports this before we kill somebody that might want to survive.
