The lottery is the state-sanctioned antithesis of Robin Hood. It steals from the poor and gives to the rich. There is no denying that the majority of people who purchase lottery tickets have low to mid incomes and are hoping to find some instant relief. The Powerball jackpot is currently $280 million. The wealthy town of Greenwich, Connecticut suspended sales for 24 hours due to congested streets and long lines caused by an influx of New Yorkers crossing the border to puchase tickets (New York does not participate in Powerball, as it runs its own lottery). Dominic Pizzimenti says, “Maybe if we hit the jackpot we can afford to live in Greenwich and complain like everyone else.” I don’t know about anyone else, but that cracks me up…
