02/25/02 10:20 PM: TIME Magazine

I was reading TIME magazine today, and I saw a letter to the editor which disturbed me. It was from someone complaining about how Sarah Hughes was on the cover of TIME instead of Michelle Kwan. Also, someone was complaining that Hughes referred to Kwan as “another competitor.” Well, as far as I have seen in the last two Olympics, Kwan is very overreated. Furthermore, unlike what the letter writer said, it was not because Kwan was Asian that she wasn’t on the cover. Why does she think there is Anti-Asian discrimination in TIME? Don’t you remember when, a few years back, out of ALL the people they could have chosen for POTY, they picked an Asian AIDS researcher? Besides, Hughes is new on the scene but had a lot of promise (and she ended up winning), so what’s wrong with having her on the cover? Everything isn’t based on race, get over it.

Also, Kwan is just another competitor, that’s the point of the Olympics, anyone has a shot at winning, and that’s why its so great. I thought it was great that someone came from behind and did such a great job to win the Gold.

This is not to say I follow figure skating, I’m as fair weather of a fan as it gets, when it isn’t the Winter Olympics, I don’t know what’s going on.
