01/07/04 09:53 PM: Top Ten for 2003
Aight. I promised a top ten songs list when I had time. I have time now, and hence, I will make the list. I’m going to cheat a little though because I don’t listen to the radio much anymore, so I don’t really know when some songs came out. Criteria for this one is if I heard them in 2003. I like random order too. Here goes…
1. “Hey Ya” by OutKast. The retro beat is intoxicating. In a world where most rappers need to swear or be out of control to be heard, OutKast redefines cool with the catch phrase “Ice Cold.” The video is one of the most entertaining out there, eschewing the regular rapper’s fare of cars, cash, women and alcohol, and going for more of a late night comedy show tribute.
2. “St. Anger” by Metallica. The raw power that emits from the stereo is enough to make anyone a convert. The energy is enough to put you in a headbanging mood and leave you wanting more.
3. “Driven Under” by Seether. I like the opening chords. The sort of glassy guitars seem ominous and depressing.
4. “Salty Dog” by Flogging Molly. Saw these guys in concert. One of the most fun concerts I was at because the guys got into it. A touch of Irish dance with loud punk music. One of their in your face songs.
5. “United States of Whatever” by Liam Lynch. Whatever!
6. “Forever Young” by Grasshopper Takeover. Local band out of Omaha. Saw them in concert and was very impressed. Try and download this song. I garauntee you will like it.
7. “In Da Club” by 50 Cent. The First, the Best. Still played at a good party, just not 5 times like when it first came out.
8. “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” by Jet. Old School riffs and old school rock from this band from Australia. Has a really good energy to it.
9. “Get Busy” by Sean Paul. Whenever I hear this song I can’t help but dance. The beat is just infectious. Those Caribbean boys know to to bust a beat.
10. “Where I End and You Begin” by Radiohead. Off Hail to the Thief, one of the stranger noises to come out of it, but melding together in one great symphony of dispair. This one barely edged out “A Wolf at the Door” and “Myxomytosis” to be the song off of HTTT.
Honorable mentions:
“Send Me on My Way” by Rusted Root
“Two Points for Honesty” by Guster
“Moonlight” by Poppelton
“Roboflow” by Pomeroy
“Out in the Rain” by Revis
If you have a chance, check out these bands, especially the lesser known ones and buy thier shit so that they can become big and the future of music won’t suck anymore.
