12/23/01 10:18 PM: Top Ten Songs

Ok, I will jump on the bandwagon. Following the lead of Nick, and Paul, I will also do my own top ten list. However, I will be a little different, and go with the top ten songs of 2001 (I think they are all from 2001, but I could be wrong). As I am unsure if they all came out in the past year, a more fitting term would be top ten recent songs. I am sure some of you will be offended by my choices, but, well, too bad. I know it is mostly (if not all) “mainstream” music, as I haven’t really had the time or effort to try and discover the more “l33t” underground/indie music sources. So I’m not perfect, I can promise you aren’t either!

These are in no specific order either, as that would be much too hard. Also, I am really bad at describing why I like a song. I am worse than Paul, who admits to be far inferior to Nick when it comes to describing what he likes. I am just listing the songs that have gotten the most listen time from me. This is not scientific by any means.

U2 – Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of

The first time I listened to All That You Can’t Leave Behind, I knew this would be a hit. I knew it would take longer to get airtime than Beautiful Day, Walk On, or Elevation, but I knew it would make it. Of course, it has made it, and has become quite popular.

Five for Fighting – Superman

I like the message of this song, and it has become even more fitting in the post 9/11 world.

Radiohead – Pyramid Song

One of the first singles off of Amnesiac, Pyramid Song is quite amazing. Not to say that the other songs on that album are not as good, but to single out one, I would have to go with this one.

John Mellencamp – Peaceful World

I have to say that this song is quite catchy. Yeah, I know that is quite broad, and not really a good indicator of the quality of a song. However, I like the diversity in insturments and vocals, and plus its another one of those songs that fits with the current world situation.

Linkin’ Park – In The End

Some people will most likely hate me for selecting this for the list, but too bad. I remember, quite a while ago, when we received a copy of Hybrid Theory at WHFH. I don’t even think I listened to it, it just ended up in a filing cabinet. Then, recently I heard In The End on the radio. I like the style of Linkin’ Park. I’m not sure how you would classify it, as I said I am bad at that. However, all I know is this is one song that has found its way into Winamp more than a few times.

Wow, that’s only five so far? This is more work than I expected.

Enya – Only Time

Ok, before all the teenage males who read this site promptly close their browsers out of “disgust” at this selection, hear me out. Hmm, wait, on second thought, you can go. I really don’t want you as a reader anyway! Ok, well now that those people are gone, let’s get back to the matter at hand. From the rest of the list thus far, you can see that 9/11 has had a impact on my selections. This one follows that pattern. However, I don’t care if you want to make me the subject of fun, but I still like the song.

Train – Drops of Jupiter

In agreement with Paul, I think this is one of the (if not the) best songs of 2001. At first, I didn’t like it as much as I do now. I know it has been overplayed on the radio, and on the various music video channels, but still, it is good. One of my favorite things about it is the large array of insturments used (the orchestra, piano, etc). It’s a welcome change from some/most of the other music released lately.

Ryan Adams – New York, New York

I’m not sure if I would even have noticed this song if not for 9/11. Yeah, I know, this is the fourth song on the list that has been chosen indirectly because of the attack, but still. This song has grown on me, and now I really like it.

Incubus – Drive

I was having a tough time selecting this between a few other candidates. Selecting ten songs out of so many turned out to be quite harder than I expected. I was thinking about picking Its Been A While by Staind, but for some reason I picked this one instead. Don’t ask me why, as I will not have an answer for you.

Dave Matthews Band – Everyday

Yeah, I suppose something off this album had to make it on my list. It was between this one and The Space Between. I went with this one, because for all reasons, I like the music video (You can stone me now). Anyway, the entire album, Everyday is good, but once again, if I had to pick one…

Wow, I’m done with the list. That was far too much work, remind me to never do that again. I’m sure you have comments about the list, send them to me!. If they are good, and don’t contain too much profanity I might just post them.
