02/08/02 11:21 PM: U2 at the Super Bowl
I have a four-day weekend. This is good.
So I have heard that some people were upset regarding U2 playing at the Super Bowl. Here is an example of what makes me sick when I see all of this, what I have dubbed, “mindless patriotism.”
I will begin by profiling the author of this “editorial” (if it can be called that). I assume he is a white male, probabally age sixty or older, a card-carrying member of the NRA, voted for Bush, voted for Dole, voted for Reagan. He most likely drives either a pickup truck, or a Ford SUV. He is pro-life, and pro-death penalty. Anti-free speech, pro-amend the hell out of the constitution to curtail freedoms. Anti-Tax, but Pro-Orwellian 1984-esque police state. Ok, I’ve gone a bit far profiling this idiot based on his editorial.
Here are a few gems from his “letter:”
“The halftime show put on during the Super Bowl was heart-moving and a disgrace. The disgrace I’m talking about is the un-American band with its anti-American lead singer Bone Head, or Bono.”
Sorry, I immediately lose respect for anyone who actually write “Bone Head.”
“Not only was it a disgrace but a slap in the face to all Americans who have realized their patriotic love of America. This Irish band’s front man, Bono, has made a habit of speaking negatively about the United States and its capitalist and imperialistic ways.”
Oh, my bad, I forgot that people aren’t allowed to disagee with the government. Also, I forgot that in order to “love” your country, you also have to “love” all the negative things about it as well. I’m just dripping with pride over things like the Iran Contra affair.
Well, I’m not going to dignify this person with much more of my time, but I have to say, this is quite stupid. Who cares if U2 doesn’t just mindlessly go along with anything the US does? Good for them. Bono speaks up for those who don’t have a voice… if you don’t like what he says, don’t listen. However, I don’t see what any of this has to do with the Super Bowl. Regardless of what their political views are, they still make damn good music.
Oh, and my last comment to Mr. Wills is, the Constitution is a bitch, isn’t it?
