09/08/01 09:26 AM: SSSCA

Well this is just great. Looks like the Senate is at it again, trying to make everything we do illegal. If you thought the DMCA was bad, try its bigger brother, the SSSCA (Security Systems Standards and Certification Act).

Basically, the SSSCA is intended to force consumers to buy products that have copy protection measures built in.

The SSSCA says that it is illegal to create, sell or distribute “any interactive digital device that does not include and utilize certified security technologies” that are approved by the U.S. Commerce Department. An interactive digital device is defined as any hardware or software capable of “storing, retrieving, processing, performing, transmitting, receiving or copying information in digital form.”

Nice, I guess my Visor needs copy protection, as well as my cell phone, my printer, monitor, cable modem, hub, router, etc. Once again, not only is it a bad bill in principle, but it is also too vague!

Normally, I am against piracy, and I do think that is is wrong, however, this proposed legislation goes way too far. Write to your Senators ladies and gentlemen and prepare for a fight.
